What is Yasmin?

Yasmin pill is a combination of Ethinyl Estradiol (estrogen) and Drospirenone (progestin), the hormones that control the menstrual cycle and prevent the process of ovulation, respectively. Thus, it is used to prevent conception.

Moreover, the drug makes the vaginal fluid thicker, a feature that makes it impossible for the sperm to swim towards the egg; hence, no fertilization occurs. Again, the drug changes the lining of the uterus to prevent any chances of the fertilized egg from attaching on the walls.

Yasmin: Dosages and administrations

The dosage of Yasmin depends on your current health conditions. However, adults’ prescription is a blister pack containing 21 light yellow tablets and seven white tablets. The seven tablets are only prescribed depending on the course.

Patients are advised to take one light yellow tablet each day for 21 days. The tablets should be taken for an interval, not exceeding 24 hours for better pregnancy prevention. The seven white tablets are taken from the 22nd to the 28th day.

Yasmin is always taken orally, with a glass of water.

How to Use Yasmin?

Yasmin should be taken every day, for 21 days (for the active pills), and seven days for the reminder pills. Patients must emphasize the importance of correct timing. Also, patients must put into consideration the possibility that ovulation and conception might occur.

The day of the start of taking this drug matters a lot.

  1. Day 1 start: you start taking the pills on the first day of your menstrual cycle
  2. Sunday start: you start taking your Yasmin pills on the Sunday after the beginning of your periods.

You can either choose a 21-day course or a 28 day Yasmin course.

21 day Yasmin course: in this course, a patient takes the active pills for three weeks. Take the Yasmin pills every day, at the same time. After the 21 days, the patients stay for seven days without any medication. Bleeding should stop within three days of taking the pills.

28-days Yasmin course: in this course, the patient takes the pill for 28 days, i.e., 21 active pills and seven reminder pills. The patient consumes the 21 light yellow tablets in a row; then follows the seven white tablets in a row.

Yasmin: Precautions

It takes at least seven consecutive days of taking Yasmin for its effect to be felt. So patients using this birth control pill must have a non-hormonal backup to achieve an effective measure against conception. Using latex condoms, spermicidal foams, and gels, in addition to Yasmin, will prevent conception.

Similarly, a non-hormonal backup birth control measures necessary in cases you miss to take your medication.

How to Switch to Yasmin?

Changing from other birth control method to Yasmin is usually not problematic if it is done in the right way. During the change over period, a patient is advised to use a non-hormonal backup measure for at least seven days to reduce the risk of conception. Typically, change to Yasmin next day you stop the other regimen.

Changing from:

  • Progestin-only pill to Yasmin: consumption of Yasmin should start the next day after terminating the Progestin-only.
  • Injection to Yasmin: the change should occur on the day your next dose is due.
  • Implant to Yasmin: start taking Yasmin the day the implant is removed.

During this process of change, a patient may experience withdrawal bleeding. This is not a significant cause of worry. However, if the bleeding continues, seek medical advice from your doctor.

Pregnancy is most likely to occur during withdrawal bleeding. Again, you may miss a period at the end of the month. If you miss two consecutive periods, it may be an indication you are pregnant. Stop taking pills and seek medical advice.

In some cases, you might take more than a pill a day. This is not a problem. You can skip the next day.

Yasmin: FAQs

Will I vomit after taking Yasmin pill?

Nausea is a familiar feeling after taking the birth control pill. If vomiting occurs, however, the efficacy of the medicine will be highly reduced. In case of nausea, see a doctor to administer an antiemetic drug to prevent vomiting.

How do I handle missed doses?

  • Take the pill soon as you can recall. Sometimes it may be necessary to take two tablets at the same time, after which you'll continue taking the rest of the pills as usual. This is enough to protect you from pregnancy. However, adhere to the time interval of 24 hours strictly.
  • If you miss two yellow pills in a row in the 1st and 2nd week, take two pills each day for two consecutive days, and then switch back to the regular schedule, i.e., a tablet a day.
  • If you miss two or more yellow pills in the 3rd week in a row, do not use the rest of the tablets. Discard the pack and start a new pack on the same day. However, if you are a Sunday starter, take one pill each day until the next Sunday. On Sunday, discontinue the old pack and start a new package. This should also apply to other weeks.

Missing your Yasmin yellow pill at any time leads to disruption of your menstrual cycle. As such you may miss your period in that month. If you miss your periods in 2 consecutive months, you must consult your doctor as it may be a sign of pregnancy. The doctor will offer the best solution.
