Is Mixing Sildenafil And Alcohol A Good Idea?

sildenafil and alcohol

In this article, we discuss if combining Sildenafil With Alcohol is a good idea?

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra which a drug prescribed to men facing erectile dysfunction (ED). Erectile dysfunction is a condition where men face problems in getting and maintaining a penile erection. It’s a problem that men from any age group or lifestyle can suffer from. However, among other methods to combat the difficulty, ingesting Sildenafil pills has proven to improve the condition by increasing blood flow to the penis, resulting in a firm penile erection.

Alcohol And Sildenafil

Although, we all can admit that a little alcohol is both welcomed and a delight for a romantic night with our significant other, it also does more harm than good when consumed over or with a Sildenafil tablet. It can simply worsen your ED condition since alcohol is one of the many things that people with erectile dysfunction must avoid.

The consumption of alcohol over Viagra can have moderate to severe effects on your health. These effects aren’t just momentary but can lead to permanent physical damages too, including prostatitis, hair loss, etc. So do yourself a favor and please don’t mix this drug with alcohol!

1. How Does It Affect Your Body?

If you’re someone who mixes Sildenafil and alcohol frequently, you might want to watch out for the following consequences:

1.1. Affects the prostate gland and the testicles

One doesn’t really need multiple reasons to list out all the ways in which alcohol is harmful to your sexual and physical health. So let’s talk about the prostate gland. The consumption of Viagra mixed with alcohol can lead to a condition known as prostatitis i.e., inflammation of the prostate gland that causes difficulty in urination.

The symptoms of prostatitis include a severe ache in the abdomen and extreme pain while urinating. The prostate gland produces semen that facilitates the nourishment and transport of sperm.

Even worse, the ingredients in alcoholic beverages and diluters consist of toxins that soak into the testicles and produce low-quality sperm. The human body is equipped to handle occasional mixing of the 2 elements, but that does not mean you take advantage and harm your insides.

1.2. Affects the Testosterone and Estrogen Levels

Usually, the body flushes out about 70 to 80 percent of the toxins (related to alcohol) in a span of 24 hours and regains its normal functionality. But if you consume excess alcohol daily then the remaining 20 to 30 percent of toxins will collect and eventually lead to further problems.

Testosterone is a hormone that can be found in the testicles of men and ovaries of women. Although it is mainly considered the male sex hormone. Estrogen, on the other hand, is a female sex hormone but also found in small amounts in men.

Alcohol consumption while on Viagra or before taking Viagra can negatively impact the secretion of these sex hormones and affect the libido of a person. Men who exhibit low testosterone and high estrogen levels start to portray female-like characteristics such as breast enlargement. Even their voice may become shriller.

1.3. Impairs coordination between brain and penile nerves

Alcohol is a depressant and leads to impairment of cognitive abilities as long as the consumer is under the influence. If the person is a chronic alcohol consumer, then there is a prolonged impairment of cognitive abilities (even when not under the influence).

The brain is responsible for sending signals indicating sexual excitation to the genitals of a man. Due to a thought, touch, visual, or a seductive sensation, the brain receives a signal that communicates a sexual desire. The brain then sends this signal to the penile nerves and induces an erection.

But when alcohol is consumed, the brain is confused and there is lesser clarity. The CNS (central nervous system) fails to successfully grasp the signal sent by the genitals. Even if it does manage to catch the signal, the next issue is trying to send it to the penis to induce an erection.

Due to the fogginess in the head, several failed signals or half-signals are attempted to be sent to the penis and it becomes harder to generate an erection. The effects of Sildenafil are thus less than its maximum efficacy.

Revatio, another medicine used to treat high blood pressure issues like Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) functions via its main active ingredient, Sildenafil. When alcohol is consumed, the effects of reducing the blood pressure and dilating the blood vessels are less intense and the medicine cannot perform its duty satisfactorily.

2. Is mixing Alcohol And Sildenafil Safe?

Think about it, alcohol reduces the brain’s signaling capacity and restricts effective neural activity between the brain and the body. This causes episodes of memory loss, slurred speech, and poor reflexes. Viagra, on the other hand, is supposed to play the role of a PDE type 5 inhibitor. It helps in allowing the regulatory effect of cGMP on the blood vessels to come into action. This leads to smoother muscle walls, broadened blood vessels, and greater blood flow to the penis.

Now, imagine a situation where you have consumed a 50 mg pill of Sildenafil a couple of hours before sexual activity. You have also had a couple of large drinks and feel tipsy in your body and mind. Unfortunately, due to this interaction of sildenafil and alcohol that you brought about, you would fail to maintain an erection for half as long as the pill is supposed to help you.

This happens due to the chemical imbalance that the alcohol has induced in the brain. The hormones and enzymes that contribute to an erection are now failing to receive signals due to malfunctioning brain activity.

The fact remains that there is no harm in taking only a drink or two before consuming Sildenafil. You have to be true to the ‘drink or two’ limit that you have set or this entire discussion becomes pointless. As long as you are consuming controlled amounts of alcohol, the effects will not be visible in your sexual performance.

If you are facing issues with regulating your alcohol consumption and are also struggling with an unsatisfactory sex life then you must visit a rehabilitation center for your alcohol problem and a doctor for your sex-related issues. Medical professionals are the go-to option to find solutions to such sexually disruptive issues.
