What is Piracetam?

Piracetam is a smart drug that is primarily used to treat myoclonus. However, it is used to treat other medical conditions off-label. This smart drug belongs to a group of compounds called racetams. Other drugs in this group are levetiracetam and brivaracetam, as well as nootropics, like aniracetam and phenylpiracetam.

Chemically, Piracetam is known as 2-oxo-1-pyrrolidine acetamide, and it is cyclic derivative gamma-Aminobutyric acid – GABA. Piracetam is marketed as Nootropil 800mg – a cognitive enhancer. Though there is no clear evidence for this.

What is Piracetam used for?

According to a few scientific studies, Piracetam can’t effectively treat dementia or cognitive disabilities. Still, other studies have concluded that this smart drug can help elderly patients with dementia resulting from Alzheimer’s disease.

Depression and anxiety

Other than the ones mentioned above, Piracetam can facilitate deformability of red blood cells. This implies that this vascular effect can assist in treating vertigo, dyslexia, Raynaud’s phenomenon, and sickle cell anemia. Again, the drug reduces the adhesion of erythrocytes on the endothelium walls of blood vessels. This has been found to promote microcirculation, especially in the brain and the kidney.

That said, Piracetam is prescribed to patients with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, memory dysfunction, alcoholism, Raynaud’s phenomenon, stroke, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), dyslexia, brain injury, and vertigo. Similarly, the drug is indicated for patients with myoclonus and age-related conditions.

Basically, Piracetam is a positive allosteric modulator of the AMPA receptor. Some studies indicates that this smart drug increases neuronal excitability through its action on ion channels.

Thus, Piracetam is potent in increasing blood flow as well as the supply of oxygen to the brain. This, in turn, improves brain function and activity, and this is the primary reason why it used to boost cognitive function and memory.

Also, Piracetam improves the secretion and function of acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter) via the muscarinic cholinergic receptors –essential for memory processes. Still, this dug, may affect glutamate receptors, associated with learning and memory. Piracetam is believed to increase the permeability of the cell membrane and increase the rate at which the brain consumes oxygen.

What are the side effects of Piracetam?

Side effects arising from Piracetam are mild and transient side effects, according to clinical research. Again, other studies indicate that the majority of people well tolerates this drug.
