What is Ovral?

Ovral is a hormonal pill used to prevent pregnancy. It is made of 2 hormones, namely, progestin and estrogen. These hormones work together to prevent ovulation as well as preventing fertilization and implantation. Typically, the birth control pills make the vaginal fluid thicker, hindering the sperms from swimming toward the egg and changes the lining of the uterus to avoid the attachment of the egg that has been fertilized.

Ovral: Dosages and administrations

Before the prescription of Ovral contraception pill, your doctor assesses your body condition first, before suggesting the right dosage. However, adults are required to take one pill a day for 21 days as a measure to prevent pregnancy. At times a doctor might prescribe seven peach tablets.

The proper effect is only achieved if the pills are taken at an interval, not exceeding 24 hours or strictly following what your physician advises you. Keep in mind that ovulation and conception may occur while using Ovral.

How to use Ovral?

21-days Ovral course

A patient should take 21 pills of Ovral per menstrual cycle. That means one pill each day for 21 days, at the same time each consecutive day. The start of taking the medication is an essential determinant of the effectiveness of this birth control drug.

  1. Day 1 start: start taking the pills on your first day of the menstrual cycle
  2. Sunday start: start taking the contraception the Sunday after you menses began

After 21 days, you'll have to hold on for seven days. Keep in mind that time frames are essential for the effectiveness of the drug.

28-days Ovral Courses

In this cycle, the doctor prescribes 21 white pills and seven peach pill. Take the white pills for 21 days in a row, same time every day. Then from the 22d day, take the seven peach pills in a row till the last pill.

Ovral with a Non-Hormonal Back-up

Doctors advise that you should have a non-hormonal back-up control in case you are taking Ovral for the first time. Ovral only becomes effective after taking it for seven consecutive days. Using latex condoms, spermicidal foams, and gels can help reduce the chances of conception.

Quitting Ovral midway treatment is strongly discouraged in birth control regimens. It may lead to conception in the cases where the pill had not taken effect properly. It is essential to use non-hormonal protection as Ovral consumption restarts and continues within the first seven days.

How to Switch to Ovral?

Patients can move from any form of birth control to Ovral. For the progestin-only pill, the change should occur the following day after stopping the other medicines. In case you want to switch from injection to Ovral, take it the next time your dose is due. And in case of an implant, start Ovral the day the implant is removed.

During this change period, it is essential to use a non-hormonal back-up measure to prevent any pregnancy. Use the backup measure for seven days consecutively.

During the changing from one birth control method to another, you may experience withdrawal bleeding. This is a usual thing, and the patient should continue taking the medication as prescribed by the doctor. Nevertheless, it is essential to consult the doctor in cases of continuous bleeding.

During withdrawal bleeding, there are some chances that conception might occur. In case the pregnancy occurs, you must discontinue the contraceptive measure.

Ovral: FAQs

Will I vomit after taking Ovral pill?

Feeling nausea is common after taking Ovral. However if vomiting occurs, it reduces the effectiveness of the pills. It is essential to see a doctor so that you get an antiemetic drug to stop vomiting.

What is the solution in case I skip or miss a dose?

Follow all the instructions provided in the medication leaflet or by the doctor. When you miss a pill, you increase your chances of getting pregnant.

  • Take the missed pill immediately you recall. However, if the next dose is close, skip it.
  • If you miss a single active pill, take two of these pills the next day and then take one pill daily for the rest of the medication.
  • If you miss two white pills in two days following each other in the first and second week, take two capsules per day for two consecutive days and then take one pill per day for the rest of the tablets. Use a non-hormonal birth control back-up for at least seven days from the day of missed pills.
  • If you missed 2 active pills consecutively in the 3rd week, discontinue that pack and start a new pack on the same day if you follow the Day 1 start. On the other hand, if you follow a Sunday start, continue taking a pill a day until Sunday. Discontinue the pack on Sunday and start a new pack.
  • If you missed 3 active tablets consecutively in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd week, discontinue the rest of the pack and begin a new pack on the same day if you started taking the pills on your first day of menses. Otherwise, for Sunday starters, you must continue taking one pill a day until Sunday when you’ll discontinue the pack and start a new one.
  • If you missed two or more pills, you might miss a period during the month. If you miss a period for two consecutive months, you might be pregnant. So call your doctor.
  • In case you miss a reminder pill, discard it and continue taking a single reminder pill per day until the pack is done. Back birth control is not necessary if you miss a reminder pill.

What if I overdose on Ovral?

So far, no reports about the adverse effects of Ovral have been documented. No adverse effects have been reported even when children consumed the drug. However, women may experience nausea and withdrawal bleeding.

Is Ovral consumption preferable for smoking women?
