Ovral L is a potent hormonal birth control pill. Its major components are hormones progestin and estrogen. This birth control pill works by preventing the development of an ovum into an egg. Therefore, no ovulation and fertilization will occur. The drug also makes the vaginal fluid thick, which makes it difficult for the sperms to swim, and changes the lining of the uterus to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg.
The dosage depends on your current body condition. The doctor makes all prescriptions. Normally, a doctor prescribes 21 white pills for 21 days (a tablet a day), and 7 peach pills for seven days (each tablet a day). The peach pills should be taken starting day 22 till the 28th day. Better pregnancy prevention occurs when Ovral L is taken in intervals, not exceeding 24 hours. However, not all birth control pills are 100 percent effective. Ovulation and conception might occur.
Take a tablet of Ovral L per day for 21 days. Take the pill orally, at exactly the same time each day. Follow the directions of the doctor and the package instructions. Do not miss or change your dose. As this might lead to conception.
There are two ways to start the medication, i.e., Day 1 start and Sunday start. Day 1 start means starting the birth control on your first day of menstrual cycle while Sunday start means beginning on the first Sunday after your menses flow. Take the 21 tablets daily for 21 days. For the remaining 7 days, take nothing unless advised otherwise by the physician.
Start the next dose in the next month (next day after the 7th day of staying without drugs), i.e., 8th day (29th day; 21 +7 days) should be your first day of the second schedule. Note that menses may or not flow.
Again follow the directions of the doctor or prescription leaflet. Find the first dosage on the pack and strictly follow the order. In the 28 day cycle, you have 21 active pills and 7 inactive pills/ reminder pills. Take the active pills as in the case above, then continue with the 7 inactive pills from the 22nd day to the 28th day. Both pill types must be taken at the same time each day.
A non-hormonal backup birth control method must always be available while on hormonal birth control treatment. They are specifically essential if you are using Ovral L for the first time or in cases where you forget to take the pills. Doctors recommend using this backup pack for at least 7 days upon starting to use Ovral L. The pack has latex condoms, spermicidal foams, and gels.
Changing Ovral L may not prevent a pregnancy in the first 7 days if you are taking it for the first time. Changing these pills with another kind of birth control during this time is therefore not recommended. However, within these days, it is vital to use a non-hormonal backup.
A patient may turn to Ovral L at any time. But, the timing should be right. Basically, the change should be a continuation. Start taking Ovral L on the next day after stopping the other treatment option. If a patient switches from implant to Ovral L, then she should begin taking Ovral L on the day the implant is removed while in the case of an injection, start taking Ovral L when the next dose begins.
During this transition, breakthrough bleeding might occur. Nevertheless, the patient must continue taking the pill as prescribed by the doctor. Only consult the doctor if the bleeding is prolonged for an unreasonably long time.
Pregnancy can occur while using Ovral L. These chances are high in cases of withdrawal bleeding.

Take the dose you missed soon as you recall. Nevertheless, if the next dosage is near, skip it and resume your normal dosage. In case you missed a white pill, take it as soon as you are able, and then resume your regular schedule. This may translate to 2 pills a day. Use the 2nd form of birth control until the 7th day. This should be in a row.
Use a second method of birth control until you take the white pills for seven days consecutively.
If you began the pills on Sunday after your menses began and you missed 3 or more white pills in a row, within a week, take the medicine each day till the next Sunday. On the same Sunday, discontinue the rest of the tablets and start a new one on that Sunday. Apply the second method of birth control for at least seven days of continuous taking of white pills.
Missing your pills and changing the schedule of taking the medication may cause you to either have or miss your period that particular month. In case you miss your period twice in a row, take it to your doctor. You might be pregnant.
If you do not take the pill on time, you might have some light bleeding or spotting. If you miss more pills, the chances of bleeding becomes higher.
The most common noted effects of overdosing are nausea and withdrawal bleeding. However, no adverse side effects are reported with the consumption of Ovral L, even in children.
