NuvaRing is a ring used as a birth control measure. The ring releases hormones estrogen and progestin into the female reproductive system to reduce the chances of ovulation and fertilization. It is made up of transparent plastic, and it is inserted in the most appropriate location in the vaginal canal, as the medication practitioner may deem so.
The ring is inserted in the first three weeks, while on the 4th week, it should be removed to allow for menstruation.
The use of NuvaRing takes a 3 week cycle. This is the procedure:
Alternatively, you can use an applicator, which is separately sold.
Once the NuvaRing is in place, maintain it for three weeks, for you to get effective results.
Wash hands clean before removing the NuvaRing. You can use your index finger or both the index finger and middle finger to remove the ring. In case of the index finger, make a slight hook shape under the forward rim and gently pull it out.
Alternatively, you can hold the edge of the ring between your index finger and middle finger and pull it out.
Insert and remove the ring on schedule, i.e., do it at the right times. It should be inserted on the first day of menses and removed after three weeks. Day period after removal of the ring allows menstruation to occur.
Always insert the next ring on the same date you inserted the previous one, i.e., 7 days after removal of the other ring.
Do not use NuvaRing with other birth control methods like the cervical cap, vaginal diaphragm, and female condom, as a backup plan. These methods may interfere with the position of the ring. However, you can use spermicides, vaginal yeast, or tampons.
If the NuvaRing is left out of the vagina for 4 weeks or more, a pregnancy might occur.
During the 7 days when the NuvaRing is out, consider using other birth control methods like condoms and spermicides to prevent pregnancy.
Always insert one ring at a time to avoid effects like vomiting, nausea, and vaginal bleeding.
Your doctor should know all the medications you are using, or you used before because NuvaRing may have dangerous interactions. This way, your doctor may advise you appropriately. However, note that the drug below is not recommended while on NuvaRing treatment.
In case you are using any other drugs and you experience unusual symptoms, consult your doctor, considering these are not all medications likely to cause adverse effects.
Below Contraindications are noted, but not limited in the following cases:
Other serious side effects include:
Some women might feel the presence of NuvaRing in the vagina while others cannot. A common thing amongst all women is a feeling of a slight movement of NuvaRing. Such change mostly occurs when the ring is not inserted in the right position. Ensure that you fit it in the correct position using your finger.
Remember, the NuvaRing cannot go beyond the cervix. However, its position can be altered with sexual intercourse straining during a bowel movement or when removing a tampon.
In some cases, the ring might be inserted into the bladder. This is accompanied by pain, either during or after that. Consult a doctor immediately in such cases.
NuvaRing can slip out of the vagina during sex, bowel movement strain, or while removing a tampon. You need to take immediate measures during such conditions. In some cases, the ring may break; this doesn’t affect its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy. Nevertheless, any broken or slipped out NuvaRing should be disposed of safely.
When the NuvaRing is out of the vagina for less than 3 hours, you can reuse it; reinsert it into the vagina. However, you should rinse it with lukewarm water.
The action you take when the ring is out of the vagina for more than 3 hours, depending on the circumstances and schedule.
In the 1st and the 2nd week, you might get pregnant. You must reinsert the very ring the earliest time possible to reduce the chances of pregnancy. Women must have a backup birth control plan; usually, a male condom laced with spermicides. Use this condom for at least seven days while the NuvaRing is still in place.
In the 3rd week reinserting the ring has no impact on birth control. In this case, any slipped or broken NuvaRing should be disposed of safely, and male condoms with spermicide be used. Nonetheless, insert a new ring right away. But that this might cause breakthrough spotting and rarely bleeding.
If you’ve been using the NuvaRing for at least 7 days, before the expulsion, you can either discard it and wait up to 7 days from the day of expulsion to insert a new one (you’ll experience withdrawal bleeding), or Do not leave a 7 day gap from the day of slippage to the new insertion date.
Test for pregnancy if the NuvaRing was out of the vagina, for a considerably long time. Further, consult your doctor for further advice.
Unexpected bleeding and spotting usually occur while using NuvaRing. This kind of bleeding occurs along the way and is not regular menses. This problem is generally standard for new users of NuvaRing. This goes away without treatment. It does not cause many problems. However, in other cases, it might persist longer than expected.
If bleeding persists, unusually heavy bleeding and spotting, see a doctor. Do not stop the birth control regimen by yourself.
The following categories of people should discontinue using NuvaRing:

There are different birth control methods, each with specific implications. Missing periods can be a sign of pregnancy, but not always. However, pregnancy is likely to occur in the following scenarios:
In case you get pregnant consult your doctor right away and stop using.
NuvaRing is non-biodegradable; thus, it does not dissolve. Its make allows it to release hormones for the 3 weeks it will be in the vagina. After three weeks, you'll have to remove it and stay the next 7 days without the ring and then start the cycle again.
Cardiovascular complications arise when a woman using hormonal birth control pills smoke. Complications may include death that results from blood clots, heart attack, or stroke.
Store this under the following set of conditions:
Always dispose of properly the already used or faulty NuvaRing. Ensure that you return them in resealable foil pouch. Neither children nor pets should get access to the previously used ring. Again, do not flush down the toilet.
