What is Generic Latisse?

Generic Latisse is used to treat abnormal growth of eyelashes; stunted growth, in particular. The active ingredient in this drug is Bimatoprost. Bimatoprost is a human-made form of prostaglandin (a natural substance produced by the body). It stimulates the eyelashes to grow, hence, making them more visible. In essence, it makes them longer, darker, denser, and thicker.

Generic Latisse comes in a liquid formulation, which, apart from treating eyelashes abnormality (Hypotrichosis), can be used to treat other conditions. For instance, the eye drop has been extensively used to treat glaucoma. However, you mustn't use the drug above the prescribed dose because it won’t work effectively. So check checkout with your doctor before using Bimatoprost.

How to Use Generic Latisse Eye Drop?

The eye drop comes with a prescription label. Still, a doctor or a pharmacist can further explain to you how to effectively use the drug. You must follow all the instructions, as told, to get a positive outcome.

Apply generic Latisse eye drops every night. The medication comes with an applicator. Place a drop of the Latisse eye drop in the applicator and draw the applicator across the upper eyelid skin, just at the base of the eyelashes. Move the applicator slowly from the inner part of the eyelashes towards the outer part. When you’ve finished applying the drug, blot out the excess eye drop solution using a clean paper towel.

Repeat the same procedure on the other eye, but using a separate applicator.

The best time to use this potent eye drop is during evening or night hours unless your doctor specifies otherwise. Before applying, ensure that you thoroughly wash and dry your face. Remove any makeup. Makeup may interfere with the Latisse eye drop.

Also, this medication should not be used when wearing contact lenses. The drug contains a preservative that may discolor the contact lenses. Upon application, wait for at least 15 minutes before putting on your contact lenses. Again, do not apply generic Latisse eye drop on the lower eyelids.

The active ingredient, Bimatoprost, is used to treat glaucoma, a condition associated with high intraocular pressure. But, if you are using generic Latisse to stimulate the growth of eyelashes, do not place the drug directly into your eye. Much as it may not harm you, it may reduce the effectiveness of future treatments.

For hygiene purposes, do not touch the tip of the bottle of the medicine dropper. It may affect your vision negatively. For better hygiene, replace the dropper after every use.

The effect of Latisse eye drop on the lashes can be reversed. If you stop using the eye drops, the eyelashes will revert to their initial status, i.e., stunted form.

How long does it take for the changes to take effect?

It takes time to realize the growth of eyelashes. Precisely, it takes two months before you notice any considerable changes in your eyelashes.

Using Generic Latisse eye drops regularly is necessary for you to notice any changes. This means, apply the required dose at the same time every evening. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage as excessive usage of the drug does not incite quicker changes. Stick to the right dose.

The outcome of using Latisse eye drop treatment may not be uniform on both eyelashes. There may be noticeable differences in color, thickness, length, and vigor. When you notice such effects, contact your doctor for professional advice.

Missed a dose or overdosed: what should you do?

Like other drugs, you must adhere to the right dosage. If taken otherwise, it might result in adverse side effects. A sudden feeling of breathlessness or passing out is a typical sign of overdose.

In case of an overdose, you must visit the nearest ER.

On the other hand, if you miss a dose, do not worry. Let the missed dose pass, but return to your regular schedule with your next dose (next night). Do not apply a double dose to cover for the missed dose.

How to store Latisse eye drop?

Store your Latisse eye drop medication in a cool, dry place. Store it at a temperature range of between 36 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and away from direct sunlight, heat or moisture. Children and pets should not get access to this medication.
Most importantly, do not use expired rugs, but rather discard them safely and appropriately.

Drug Interactions: How Does Generic Latisse Interact With Other Drugs?

In general, generic Latisse eye drop is unlikely to interact with other drugs administered through injection or orally. However, it is vital to be cautious. Chances are that the eye drop can interact with other drugs. That is why it is essential to take the medicine under a doctor's instructions. The doctor will be able to monitor you for any unusual signs.

Also, tell your doctor about all other medications you are using. For instance, glaucoma medication such as Latanoprost and Travoprost may interact with the medication.

Precautions of Generic Latisse Eye Drop

Do not get the drug over-the-counter. It's recommended to see a doctor so that you can discuss the details of the drug and the possible side effects. This includes discussions about allergies to Bimatoprost or any other medication used to treat glaucoma.

Note that apart from Bimatoprost, this drug contains other ingredients and preservatives such as Benzalkonium chloride, which more often causes discoloration of contact lenses and allergic reactions. So, start by talking to your doctor.

If you have had issues with your eyes, such as uveitis, macular edema, glaucoma, and lens extraction, among others, it is essential to share it with your doctor. Treating eyelashes and eye disease at the same time can be tricky. If your doctor gets this information, he/she can find a safe way of solving your problem. Again, while using the medication, look out for emerging conditions in your eye. They may be due to infection or injury.

Pregnant women should use Generic Latisse with caution. Actually, they should use it only when needed. Research is unclear whether or not the drug will pass into the breast milk. So if you are a nursing mother, consult with your doctor before using the medicine.

Generic Latisse is used to treat a specific condition that you currently have, as per the prescription. Do not, therefore, share it with other people. Again, do not apply it to any other body part.

Side Effects of  Latisse Eye Drop

Before prescription, the doctor assesses your situation to see how fit you are to use the drug. However, at times, if any adverse effects occur. Seek medical help immediately if you have allergic reactions, difficulty in breathing, hives, and swollen tongue, throat, face, and lips.

Other notable side effects include eye redness, itchiness, and discomfort in the eye. Also, the eyelid may turn red, and the eyes may feel dry.

Stop using the medication if you have any of the following:

  • Vision problem and seeing halos around light
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Swollen, crusting or draining eye
  • Severe burning or itchiness in the eye

Generic Latisse eye drop always causes discoloration. When directly applied to the eye as a treatment measure for glaucoma, the drug will gradually cause the browning of the iris. Similarly, when applied to the eyelashes, the color of the effect may change. Thus it is used to improve the appearance of the lashes of the eye.

In some cases, it causes a change in the color of eyelids. The eyelid and the skin across the base of the eyelashes may darken. The darkening of the eyelids is temporary as it fades away when you stop using the medication, but, discoloration of the iris is permanent.

Remember, Latisse can cause growth of hair. If the drug comes in contact with other parts of the body, it might cause hair growth in these parts. Therefore, when it spills on the skin, wipe it immediately. Similarly, after applying it at the base of eyelashes, wipe off the excess.

The above-mentioned side effects are not a complete list of possible adverse effects. If you notice any other effects not mentioned above, call your doctor.

Is Generic Latisse Eye Drop Safe to Use?

Yes. Bimatoprost, the active ingredient in Generic Latisse eye drops, is approved by the FDA. The component is safe and effective in treating glaucoma and help in the growth of eyelashes in people whose eyelashes are stunted. Nevertheless, you need to follow the instructions precisely, as explained by medical experts to get the best results.
